A Beginner's Guide To

Garcia / Grisman

Acoustic Duets • Dawg Music • Two Old Friends, No Amps

In the last years of his life, Jerry Garcia set down the electric guitar and made warm, intimate acoustic music with mandolin master David Grisman, an old friend from his bluegrass youth.

The Short Version

What Is This?

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman first played together in the early 1960s bluegrass scene, then went their separate ways for decades. In 1990 they reunited in Grisman's home studio and, over the next few years, recorded a series of gorgeous acoustic albums for Grisman's own Acoustic Disc label.

The music blends bluegrass, folk, blues, and jazz into what Grisman calls "Dawg music": unhurried, virtuosic, and full of warmth.
