Who Are They?

Khruangbin (pronounced KRUNG-bin) are an instrumental trio from Houston, Texas: bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson. "Khruangbin" is a Thai word that translates loosely to "engine fly," meaning airplane, a fitting name for a band whose music travels the globe without ever needing a passport, or a single word of lyrics.

They build spacious, largely wordless grooves out of a global record collection: Thai funk, Persian pop, dub reggae, West African guitar, and sixties soul, turned into something cinematic and instantly their own. Laura Lee's deep melodic basslines, Mark's clean, reverbed guitar, and DJ's crisp, patient drums are the whole world; almost everything they make is instrumental.

Their story starts small and local, and grows, one crate-dug influence at a time, into a global sound.

1. 2010

   A band forms, and takes its name from the sky

   Laura Lee and Mark Speer, who met at their Houston church, form the band with drummer DJ Johnson. They take their name from the Thai word for "airplane."

2. 2015

   The Universe Smiles Upon You

   Their debut, steeped in vintage Thai funk, quietly becomes an underground favorite among listeners hungry for something outside the usual.

3. 2018

   Con Todo el Mundo

   The album widens the palette and the audience, and "Maria También" becomes a signature song for the band.

4. 2020

   Mordechai and Texas Sun

   Mordechai brings vocals and dancefloor energy forward, and the Texas Sun EP with Leon Bridges expands their reach; they become a festival main-stage act.

5. 2024

   A LA SALA

   The record strips things back to the trio's core, a warm, intimate return to their sound.
